Nachtwachen

2022

For percussion quartet - ca. 90 min

Parade armor of Alessandro Farnese (1570)

In this piece, I wanted to experiment with how and when a transition from the absolutely static, which develops slowly and flatly, to the enthusiastic passion of calm energy takes place.

To achieve my goal, I attempted to compose a transition from a place of noise to the gradual richness of the dreamlike, which is interrupted by the abstract outburst of the performers' homorhythmic attempt.

The title of the piece is not meant to evoke a narrative or representational listening experience. It is a reference to the mysterious and grotesque book "Nachtwachen of Bonaventura" from the 19th century, which served as an inspiration for the abstract and discontinuous structure.
